Urgent: Iran state TV reports 3,117 killed in unrest in 1st official death toll

TEHRAN, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Iran's state television reported Wednesday that 3,117 people have been killed in recent unrest.

The figure, broadcast by IRIB TV, offers the first formal count by Iranian authorities since demonstrations erupted in late December. The government has previously acknowledged "several thousand" deaths but did not provide a specific total.
