Tehran announces 1-day public shutdown due to cold weather

TEHRAN, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Iranian authorities have announced closures of schools and public offices in the capital of Tehran for Wednesday to manage energy consumption amid a sharp temperature drop, the official news agency IRNA reported on Tuesday.

All schools and universities, government offices, institutions and organizations, as well as trade centers, will be closed, according to Tehran Province's task force for optimized energy consumption management, the report said.

Certain centers, including those providing medical as well as rescue and relief services, will not be closed, and banks will operate through a limited number of branches, it added.

Tehran's temperature is forecasted to drop to minus 6 degrees Celsius in the evening, with daytime highs of 2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
