TEHRAN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian health ministry reported on Friday 17,605 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 5,396,013.

The pandemic has claimed 116,436 lives in the country so far, after 364 new deaths were registered in the past 24 hours, Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education said on its official website.

A total of 4,708,195 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 6,902 remain in intensive care units, it said.

By Friday, 27,790,835 Iranians have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines, while 13,459,625 have taken two doses.

The official report added that 30,782,338 tests have so far been carried out in the country.

Iran has been facing a surge of the Delta variant of the coronavirus for about three months.
