TEHRAN, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday called for collective support of the Muslim world for the Palestinians.
The Palestinian issue continues to be "the most important and active issue" for Muslims collectively, Khamenei said in a message on the state TV as the Iranians marked the annual Quds (Jerusalem) Day in support of the Palestinians.
The Iranian top leader also called for resistance against Israel. "Fighting against this despotic regime is fighting against oppression and terrorism. And this is a collective responsibility," he said.
Quds Day, initiated by Iran in 1979 to express support for the Palestinians, is an annual event held on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, which falls on May 7 this year.
Protests have been held on the day every year in Iran and some regional countries to protest against Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem since the 1967 war.
