TEHRAN -- The Iranian foreign ministry on Monday accused Israel of "inducing panic" in the Persian Gulf when rejecting the country's claim that Iran was involved in a blast aboard an Israeli-owned ship last week, the Iranian Students' News Agency reported.

"We strongly reject this accusation," Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a weekly press briefing, while noting that Israel is "the basis of all insecurity and instability in the region."

SEOUL -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that his government is ready to talk with Japan amid the prolongation of the frayed ties between Seoul and Tokyo over historical and trade issues.

"Our government is ready to sit down and have talks with the Japanese government at any time," Moon said in his nationally televised speech to mark the 102nd anniversary of the independence movement on March 1, 1919 that took place during the 1910-1945 Japanese colonization of the Korean Peninsula.

ACCRA -- Ghana's National Peace Council on Sunday urged stakeholders involved in the presidential election petition to uphold peace as the Supreme Court is expected to deliver its judgment Thursday.

"The National Peace Council respectfully calls on all the parties in the dispute, the former president, John Dramani Mahama, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as well as the Electoral Commission to strictly adhere to the ruling of the Supreme Court regardless of who wins or loses in the yet to be delivered judgment," the peace council said in a statement.

WASHINGTON -- The White House said on Sunday it was disappointed that Tehran had rejected an offer to hold informal talks with European countries and the United States over the Iran nuclear issue.

"While we are disappointed at Iran's response, we remain ready to reengage in meaningful diplomacy to achieve a mutual return to compliance with JCPOA commitments," a White House spokesperson said.
