'Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline not under sanctions'

The Iran News.Net
Thursday 26th January, 2012

The gas pipeline project between Pakistan and Iran does not come under the European Union sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear issue, the goverment said Thursday.

"Pakistan is committed to the gas pipeline and sanctions do not cover this project," Foreign Office spokesperson Abdul Basit said during his weekly press briefing here.

Although Pakistan was studying the US legislation about sanctions on Iran, Basit said it is clear that gas pipeline was not covered by them.

The spokesman said Pakistan has repeatedly said that Iran's nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully through negotiations and dialogue by the international community.

To a question about reports of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's likely visit to Pakistan, Basit said: "No bilateral visit between Pakistan and Iran has been finalised yet."
