Erdogan miffed with NATO over lack of support in Syria

Sheetal Sukhija - Sunday 11th March, 2018

ANKARA, Turkey - With Turkish military forced locked in a deadly battle against Syrian Kurdish fighters in Syria, the Turkish President on Saturday slammed NATO.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized NATO for not supporting the country's ongoing military operation in Syria.

Accusing the military alliance of double standards, Erdogan asked, "Hey NATO, where are you?"

Erdogan further added that NATO member Turkey sent troops to conflict zones whenever requested, but did not receive support in return.

Erdogan has urged NATO to come to Turkey's aid, saying its borders are "under threat right now."

Since January 20, Turkey has launched a solo military offensive against the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units or YPG in a bid to drive them out of Afrin in northwestern Syria.

Turkey believes that the YPG is a terrorist organization.

However, Turkey’s NATO ally, the U.S., backs the fighters to combat the Islamic State group.
